Early Morning News

Thursday, June 8, 2006 at 8:12 am 24 comments

Turns out that a lot of news developed overnight.  The big thing is that today's surgery has been cancelled, all for good reasons.  Right now Doug's breathing on his own, just using the ventilator for assistance.  The doctors have decided to let that play out, and see if sometime soon he can start breathing entirely on his own.  So, the tracheostomy is called off.  In addition, the long-term feeding tube and blood filter have also both been cancelled.  They're just going to wait and see what he can do on his own.

Also: Around 2am last night Doug opened his eyes briefly.  Since then he's been really gripping his teddy bear and Jen's hand as well as unconsciously shifting his legs slightly every now and then to get comfortable.  Rumor has it that he's probably actually trying to pedal, that's how hardcore of a cyclist Doug is…  He's also coughing a lot due to the ventilator tube, which is a good sign because it means he's responding to the irritation.

So, this is all great news to get in the morning.  We'll see how it plays out during the day.  Despite the surgery being cancelled, Dan and Jen would still like everyone to hold off coming by until late this afternoon.  Finally, I've been told that they have started playing music to Doug to provide some stimuli.  The first song off his iPod was by Nelly McKie, which means nothing to me but probably does to some of you.

Well we know who the toughest dog in town is. *ahem* toughest “Doug” actually.

As an interesting, though unrelated, side note “AHEM”, (which I used in the form of onomatopoeia for the sound of me clearing my throat) is also an acronym which stands for: Association of Hydraulic Equipment Manufacturers. Well at least I enjoyed that bit of engineering humor.

    Semper pugnamus Doug!

As another side note, we are holding a dinner for everyone who knows Doug and would like to come show support for Doug. It will be held Saturday at 6:30 PM in the hospital cafeteria. As of right now, I will be making chicken parm/pasta, risoto (rice-like dish with veggies), and probably some sort of fish and/or beef dish. Z is making twice baked potatoes, and Jessi’s mom is giving us a cake. Renee will also be making something, but I’m not sure yet (renee, post a comment as to what). We do still need some things. 1. any more food people would like to bring 2. disposable plates, napkins, cups, utensils 3. drinks – soda, juice, anything 4. italian bread and parm cheese
Please comment or call me at 610.513.7346 if you can contribute. Thanks

I was joking with some of my friends at work that as soon as the meds are off Doug’s just gonna jump right up and take off on his bike.. and then he starts moving before he’s even fully out…

Doug, you need to get better before the 18th because i simply refuse to see you in an ICU.
I remember the sheer shock of seeing you after you got your hair cut off… and you randomnly (to me because I was asleep) showing up in the middle of the night at the apartment with some freshman that you rescued from a party… and all the randomn running into each other at parties and on K-9… You’re a pirate, and unless that truck was a ninja you’ll have to come back and defeat it, That’s just the way the world works!

Also, does anyone know… Are we allowed to send flowers? If so, how can I send Dougie flowers? I can’t get out there for like another 9 or 10 days…

Becka—flowers would of course be awesome. I think you can just send them to Doug at:

    Room 5018, Rhoads Building
Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
    34th & Spruce
    Phila, Pa, 19104

Note that after this weekend he’ll probably be in another room.

To those sending flowers, I was informed by his mother today that flowers are not really allowed in his room till he moves out of the ICU but feel free to send him a card.

    Attention Doug Markgraf
Hospital of the University of Pennsylvania
    34th & Spruce
    Philadelphia, PA 19104

Do not but his room number on the card so that even if he does move he will still get it. And as soon as he is allowed to receive flowers I will post it on here.

Also something that his parents asked me to reitterate is that he is not allowed to have visitors as of yet so please do not go back to his room. But please feel free to come to the waiting room to keep his family and other friends company and to support them.

Love is the answer at least for most of the questions in my heart…

Why are we here? And where do we go? And how come it’s so hard?

It’s not always easy and sometimes life can be deceiving…

I’ll tell you one thing, it’s always better when we’re together…

(that’s the way doug… come back and be together with all of us again!)

Joe: I don’t know you but I want to thank you for doing this. Doug means so much to his extended robotics family. You are a truly caring person to do this.

I am also so pumped up about todays news. I keep reading the words “fighter” and “scrapper” in peoples comments and that is exactly what Doug is.

    Doug:
I am so excited about your progress. I am also comforted to know that you have such a caring family and by how many great friends you have. I never have to worry about someone looking after you. You better get up soon because you are the only announcer that can work with Dave at Ramp Riot. I can’t wait until we can talk again. I’ll have to wait in a pretty long line but it will be worth the wait!!

coincidental story about the first song played for doug.. a year or two ago he was at my house for a party of my sister’s once and had brought his laptop along. with itunes on shuffle, a good song came on and i asked him who the artist was. indeed it was nellie mckay. being that i liked the song so much, he happily burned me a copy of her cd. to this day she is probably one of my favorite artists. its great to know that theyre playing some good music in there… im sure its helping doug come around!
