Philly Distance Run

So yesterday, I did the Philadelphia Distance Run after all. Well, I did run in it, but you won’t find my name in the results… I was one of those invisible runners. I really just ran the route, and timed myself. Of course, I had some 15,000 people doing it with me, and that gave me more motivation to run fast.

Kinda a funny thing about the fast running: I started the race standing in the no. 12 corral, which ended up crossing the start line a whole 25 minutes after the first foghorn was blown. So needless to say, I was running with people who were slightly slower than I usually run. As a result, I pretty much was dodging people and passing them for the entire 13.1 mile stretch! Lemme tell you, I’ve gotten good at seeking out the effective paths and everything.  I didn’t really have any pains in my legs until the last mile, which was such a blessing. I just chugged along, enjoying being the annoying guy who was passing everyone. I especially had to pass people who were talking while they ran; those people definitely weren’t running my speed if they could manage to talk while they were running, I figured.

I had a lot of fun running it, and nothing can be better than being pleased with one’s self after an event that’s new to him.  I had my timer on my watch going the exact moment I crossed the start line, and I couldn’t believe the time I was making on course. As I crossed the finish line, I noticed an awesome time: 1:36:10 !  It pretty much means that if I had been running a full 26.2 miles, I’d finish a marathon in 3 hours and 12 minutes. Not bad, considering the boston-qualifying time is 3 hours, 10 minutes!  Because I spent so much time dodging people, I’m going to safely say that I ran this course at BQ pace. :sigh of relief:   Had I been registered, I would have finished in the top 1150 runners in the race.

Now I’m back to wanting to do the Philly Marathon. Registration is closed, but there’s still hope. I’ll update you when I find out more info.

I start classes today, and have an interview, and my first ‘official’ day of pre-student teaching.  Alrighty!
